A process to prepare recommendations regarding the Strategic Approach and sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 will be launched in Brasilia, Brazil, from 7 to 9 February 2017. Approximately 300 participants representing governments, industry, United Nations agencies and civil society are expected to participate.
The Strategic Approach today is an “umbrella” framework with a very broad scope that provides an inclusive platform for action towards 2020. This is a unique opportunity to create a new and enhanced platform that will support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and consider the broader pollution agenda, while drawing from experience to date in implementing the Strategic Approach.
This first meeting will be pivotal in laying the foundation and developing the ambition for the vision of sound chemicals and waste beyond 2020. The outcome of the process will form the basis for formal decision-making and adoption of a future policy framework for sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020.
Regardless of the outcome in 2020, it is clear that efforts must be made to strengthen political priority and awareness to how the sound management of chemicals and waste will contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals. Let’s start from today!
