2nd African regional meeting, Dar e Salaam, Tanzania, United Republic Of, 14-19 July 2008
Following the adoption of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) in February 2006, the regional meetings called for in the SAICM Overarching Policy Strategy by the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) in its resolution I/1 are a key element in the collective efforts to commence implementation of SAICM.
The African region at its first implementation meeting, held in Cairo, Egypt, from 11 to 14 September 2006, developed regional coordination arrangements, adopted a regional action plan for SAICM implementation, agreed on priorities for regional projects and developed a regional position on SAICM financial considerations. A further African regional meeting was proposed for the second half of 2008 to allow the formation of African positions in preparation for the second session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM2), which will be held in Geneva from 11 to 15 May 2009.
In response the SAICM secretariat is organizing a second African regional meeting on SAICM in Dar es Salaam in July 2008 in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania and with financial support from the Government of Switzerland.
In addition, UNEP Chemicals Branch will organize a two-day workshop on chemicals management and legal and institutional infrastructures and a two-day African regional consultation on mercury . the workshop is part of the regional series funded by the Government of Sweden. The combined events was held from 14 to 19 July and preceded by a meeting of the Africa Core Group as follows.
