The second session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management in its resolution II/2 recalled the importance accorded to regional meetings in paragraph 26 of the Overarching Policy Strategy and in resolution I/1 of the Conference and called for at least one meeting for each of the five United Nations regions to be organized in the current intersessional period. In accordance with the request, the SAICM secretariat in collaboration the Ministry of Land and Environment, Jamaica, organized a Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) regional meeting on the SAICM in Kingston, Jamaica, in March 2010.
In addition, UNEP is organized a consultation to assist countries in the Latin America and Caribbean region to prepare for the upcoming negotiations on mercury as mandated by UNEP Governing Council in its decision 25/5 . A workshop on nanotechnology and manufactured nanomaterials was organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in association with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Inter-Organization Proramme for the Sound Management of Chemicals (IOMC). The workshop was in response to the request by the International Conference on Chemicals Management in its decision II/4 for action on nanotechnology and manufactured nanomaterials. A workshop on industrial chemicals management was organized by the Secretariat of the Rotterdam Convention and the World Health Organization (WHO). The events took place as follows:
- Sunday 7 March: LAC Regional Coordinating Committee meeting on SAICM (members only);
- Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 March: LAC regional meeting on SAICM
- Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March: LAC regional consultation and training on mercury;
- Friday 12 March: UNITAR/ OECD/IOMC awareness raising workshop on nanotechnology
- Saturday 13 March: Rotterdam Convention/WHO workshop on industrial chemicals management.
