International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (ILPPW) 21-27 October 2018

The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint is a voluntary partnership formed by UN Environment and the World Health Organization to prevent exposure to lead, while promoting the phase-out of paints containing lead. Every year, the Lead Paint Alliance organizes the International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week to provide an opportunity for organizations and institutions around the world to focus attention on lead. The theme this year is the need for individuals, civil society organizations, industry and governments to work together to Ban Lead Paint.. The official website for the ILPPW is maintained by the World Health Organization.

The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint/Lead Paint Alliance Advisory Council meets twice a year. The first 2018 Advisory Council meeting was held in April, the next will be convened in September.


Elimination of Lead in Paint - Permanent Mission Briefing, 12 June 2018, Geneva, Switzerland

UN Environment provided a formal briefing and an informal lunch session on the Lead Paint Alliance for Permanent Missions in Geneva as part of a Chemicals and Waste Briefing sponsored by the Geneva Environment Network. The briefing consisted of a panel of representatives from UN Environment, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, IPEN – a partner NGO of the Alliance, and the International Paint and Printing Ink Council.

Meeting of Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint Advisory Council and UN Environment Regional Directors, 6 December 2017

The overall goal of the meeting was to share information and strategic guidance, provide a platform for synergy and collaboration, and draft concrete action points to eliminate lead paint in order to meet the SAICM 2020 goal of sound chemicals management.


Make a Voluntary Commitment to Eliminate Lead Paint! 4-7 December 2017

In anticipation of the UNEA3 meeting, UN Environment invited governments, private sector entities and civil society organizations to make tangible voluntary commitments to help end the pollution of our air, land, waterways, and oceans, and to safely manage our chemicals and waste.

Caribbean Workshop on the Establishment of Legal Limits on Lead in Paint, 1 December 2017, Kingston, Jamaica

The main objectives of the workshop were to raise awareness of the dangers of lead exposure from paint and to facilitate discussions about how to establish legal limits on lead paint and potential next steps in Jamaica and the Caribbean region. In total, 38 people participated in the workshop, representing more than 20 organizations and agencies from the public, private, and civil sectors.

The workshop was cosponsored by the UN Environment Office for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Office for North America. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), the Chair of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint (Lead Paint Alliance), and the American Bar Association (ABA) and ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ROLI) assisted with planning and implementation of the workshop.

Project Preparation Workshop for SAICM GEF project Lead in Paint component, 12-13 October 2017, Geneva, Switzerland

The Global Environment Fund (GEF) approved a project that has a lead in paint component. The approved project identification form is available here. A brief description of the project is available here.


Promoting the Elimination of Lead Paint in the CARICOM Region Webinar, 7 April 2017 – Online

The webinar took place online, chaired by the US EPA and UN Environment's Regional Office in Latin America and the Caribbean, on Friday, April 7th.

China-Africa Cooperation Workshop, 24 March 2017, Beijing, China

UN Environment and Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection co-organized a Workshop on China-Africa Cooperation on the Elimination of Lead Paint in Beijing, China on 24 March 2017. This workshop was held as a part of UN Environment's project, funded by the Government of China, to work towards the phasing out the use of lead in paint in China and Africa. The project includes the analysis of Chinese paint market, analysis of lead in paint samples in China, information exchange with African countries, awareness raising activities, review of national regulations and standards, and the development of proposals for further action to eliminate lead paint. Representatives from Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia and Tanzania were invoted, as well as Chines representatives from ministries, research organizations and industry.
